⚡ NV Energy Proposes 9% Rate Increase: What It Means for Southern Nevada Residents

NV Energy has submitted a request to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) seeking a 9% rate increase for Southern Nevada customers. This proposal is aimed at raising an additional $215.7 million to help cover the costs of major infrastructure investments.

🔧 Infrastructure Investments

The proposed increase is intended to recoup expenses from several large-scale energy projects, including:

  • Silverhawk Natural Gas Plant – Built to meet peak energy demands during high-usage periods.

  • Reid Gardner Battery Storage Project – A 220MW/440MWh facility designed to store solar energy and distribute it when demand is highest.

  • Greenlink Transmission Project – A massive power infrastructure project whose costs have ballooned from under $2.5 billion to over $4.2 billion.

📈 Additional Proposals

  • Return on Equity Increase – NV Energy is seeking to raise its shareholder return from 9.5% to 10.25%.

  • Net Metering Adjustment – The utility wants to shift from a monthly net metering model to a 15-minute interval system, which could increase bills for new rooftop solar customers by roughly $11/month.

  • Low-Income Customer Relief – NV Energy proposes eliminating the $18.50 monthly service charge for qualifying low-income customers. This cost would be redistributed among other ratepayers.

📅 Proposed Implementation Timeline

  • October 1, 2025 – The new rates would take effect, pending approval.

  • April 1, 2026 – Changes to net metering rules and the introduction of demand charges for residential and small commercial customers would roll out.
